What Your Child Will Experience

Sensory Exploration

Toddlers learn best when they can touch, taste, smell, see, and hear. Our classrooms are filled with sensory-rich materials including water tables, sand play, finger painting, playdough, and textured manipulatives that engage all five senses for deeper, more meaningful learning.

Group & Individual Play

Our toddler daycare program balances whole-class activities, small-group projects, and free individual play. This variety gives toddlers the chance to learn cooperation and social skills in groups while also pursuing their own interests and developing independence.

Kindergarten Readiness

Even at the toddler stage, we are laying the foundation for kindergarten readiness. Through the HighScope Curriculum, toddlers develop early literacy, numeracy, social-emotional regulation, and the confidence they need to thrive when they transition to preschool and beyond.

A Typical Day in Our Toddler Daycare Program

A structured yet flexible routine designed for active, curious toddlers.

  • Arrival & Free Choice - Toddlers select from classroom interest areas including blocks, dramatic play, art supplies, books, and sensory stations. Teachers observe and extend children's play with open-ended questions and new materials.
  • Bilingual Circle Time - Group songs, stories, movement games, and calendar activities in both Spanish and English. Toddlers practice listening, counting, identifying colors and shapes, and participating in group discussions.
  • Plan-Do-Review® - A core HighScope routine where toddlers choose their activity, carry out their plan, and share what they did. This builds decision-making, communication, and executive function skills.
  • Snack & Lunch - Family-style meals where toddlers practice self-serving, pouring, and cleanup. Mealtimes are social experiences that build vocabulary, manners, and healthy eating habits.
  • Small-Group Learning - Teacher-led activities in literacy, math, science, and art. Small groups allow individualized attention and scaffolding based on each child's development.
  • Outdoor Play - Active play at nearby Jersey City parks with climbing, running, nature walks, and group games that build gross motor skills, coordination, and social cooperation.
  • Rest & Quiet Time - A peaceful transition with soft music, stories, and individual rest. Teachers respect each toddler's unique rest needs.
  • Afternoon Enrichment - Creative projects, music and movement, dramatic play, and free exploration before pickup.

Toddler Milestones We Nurture

Between 20 months and 2.5 years, toddlers are developing rapidly in every domain. They are building sentences, asserting independence, mastering physical skills, and learning to navigate social relationships. Our toddler daycare program in Jersey City is intentionally designed to support each of these milestones.

Our HighScope-trained teachers create an environment where toddlers can safely explore, take age-appropriate risks, and practice new skills. With bilingual instruction woven throughout the day, children are building vocabulary and comprehension in both Spanish and English during this critical window for language development.

  • Expanding vocabulary and forming sentences in two languages
  • Running, jumping, climbing, and fine motor precision
  • Beginning to share, take turns, and resolve simple conflicts
  • Early literacy: recognizing letters, enjoying books, and storytelling
  • Self-care skills: hand washing, dressing, and toileting readiness

Toddler Daycare Questions

What families ask most about our toddler classroom in Jersey City.

Our Toddler program is for children from 20 months through 2.5 years, the final stage of our program before children move on to preschool. This is a period of rapid language growth, physical confidence, and emerging independence.

Yes. We follow your lead and begin when your child shows genuine readiness signs rather than at a set age. Our teachers coordinate closely with you so the routine, language, and encouragement your child hears at school matches what happens at home, which makes the whole process considerably smoother.

Toddlers feel intensely and have limited words to express it, so emotional outbursts are a normal part of development rather than misbehavior. Our teachers acknowledge the feeling, help the child name it in Spanish or English, and offer calm choices. Over time this builds real emotional vocabulary and self-regulation skills.

Yes. By the time children leave our Toddler program they have experience with group routines, following multi-step directions, early literacy and numeracy, self-care skills, and cooperative play. HighScope has more than 50 years of research showing lasting advantages in school readiness and long-term academic achievement.

It is the signature HighScope daily sequence (the Plan-Do-Review® routine). Toddlers decide what they want to do, carry out their plan, then talk about what happened. It sounds simple, but this cycle directly develops executive function, planning, language, and reflection, which are among the strongest predictors of later school success.
